Kiki Osinbajo, daughter of former Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has criticised online content that portrays wives as their husbands’ caregivers, questioning why women are often expected to shoulder more responsibilities in marriage than men.
In a video shared online, Kiki expressed frustration over discussions suggesting that wives should remain with their husbands in old age to serve as their nurses and mothers, arguing that women also deserve care and support.
She referenced a video in which a man argued that his wife should not leave him for three years to observe omugwo because he would need her care in his 80s.
Questioning the expectation, Kiki asked whether the wife would not also need care herself, adding that online conversations about marriage often focus on what women should do while paying less attention to expectations for men.
“Is marriage the place where women's dreams go to d+ie or they become slaves just because they're married?” she asked.
The content creator also criticised men who believe women should respect them simply because they are men, regardless of their behaviour or relationship with them.
Addressing the issue of submission, Kiki argued that the biblical instruction for wives to submit applies to their own husbands, not every man they encounter.
She urged men who expect women outside their marriages to submit to them to reconsider their expectations, insisting that respect should not be demanded solely on the basis of gender.
Kiki’s comments come amid ongoing online discussions about gender roles, marital responsibilities and expectations placed on women in relationships.
